Message from the Pastor
Pastor Rick Johns and family

 Greetings,

I am Rick Johns, pastor of the Courthouse Road Seventh-day Adventist Church.  I'm glad you've had the opportunity to visit us online and hope that, if possible, you will come see us in person.  For many years I've had the priviledge of leading this visionary congregation and I have seen God do amazing things among us.  I have never been part of a church so diverse, yet so united; so careful, yet so willing to risk it all for God; so passionate, yet so humble--it has been a neat journey.  We're far from perfect, but we have discovered that the message of Jesus changes us in a powerful holistic way.  We have discovered that there really is more to this life, so much more.  There's more power, more joy, more beauty, more peace, more freedom, and more love than we ever first imagined.  There's something special happening here, so please come see for yourself.  If you can't come, please email us and take advantage of the resources on this website.  God brought you to this site for a reason, let Him show you why.

...because there's more to this life,

Pastor Rick Johns

Biographical Sketch of Rick L. Johns

Richard L. Johns was born the son of an Adventist pastor Jerry Johns and his wife Clara Lou in 1974 in Petosky, MI.  His brother and only sibling, Will Johns, was born 15 months later.  He spent his early childhood in Michigan and Oregon, before the family moved to Greeneville, Tennessee in 1984.

Rick graduated in 8th grade from Greeneville Adventist Academy in 1989.  A year and a half later, his father accepted the call to pastor the Standifer Gap SDA church in Chattanooga, TN, a post he would occupy for the next 12 years.  Rick graduated from Collegedale Academy in 1993 and enrolled at Southern Adventist University.  There he met and fell in love with Jessica Arroyo from Sterling, MA.  They married in June of 1997, two months after his graduation from Southern with a BA in Theology.

Rick was called by the Carolina Conference and began his ministry in Anderson and Westminster, SC.  After that internship, Rick went to Andrew’s University to study for his Masters of Divinity.  It was here that Rick and Jessica had there first child, Grace, born in January of 2000.

Rick completed his MDiv in December of 2000 and was assigned to his first district in Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids, NC.  Rick served at those two churches for just over two years before he received the call to pastor the Courthouse Road SDA Church in Richmond, VA.  Rick and Jessica moved to Richmond in April of 2003.  On November 22, 2003, Rick was ordained by the Potomac Conference on the same Sabbath the Courthouse Road Church celebrated the burning of their mortgage.  In October of 2004, Rick and Jessica were blessed with a second daughter, Audrey Johns.  In the summer of 2007 Rick enrolled at the Denver Seminary and began his doctorate of ministry in the leadership tract, “Leadership in Community Spiritual Formation.”  He hopes to complete this degree in 2011.
